A great company culture can make or break your startup. Today’s job hunters are looking for more than just salary and benefits. They want a place where they are valued, have a voice, and feel like part of the team. If you can’t provide that, they will probably look elsewhere.
So how do you build culture? There are some really great options out there, especially if you’re willing to think outside the box. We asked WeWork members to discuss some of the benefits that their staff appreciates the most.
Build a fun environment
Build a really fun network where we each thrive in what we are most talented and passionate about.
Give people a chance to grow
What I appreciated most—after working in asset management for over a decade—was the opportunity for endless growth in my role, with projects, and responsibilities. I started as an administrative assistant and ended up the chief operating officer.
Encourage a colleague relationship
Answering to clients as opposed to a boss (I'm independent with an army of freelancers). It gives me the freedom to work from anywhere, at any time. On top of that, working with outsourced freelancers means there's more of a colleague relationship, as opposed to a boss/subordinate relationship. I have more trust in people who are at my level in their chosen profession.
Be less hierarchical
Answering to clients, as opposed to a boss, gives me the freedom to work from anywhere, at any time. On top of that, working with outsourced freelancers means our relationships are more equal, and less hierarchical.
Offer wellness programs
Offer health and wellness experiences such as office yoga or massage.
Give workers lots of freedom
It’s autonomy and the freedom to determine how something gets done. Once an organization and employee are aligned in their goals, the employee should have the freedom to determine how to meet those goals. The end result is a happier employee who is feels more empowered, accountable, motivated and loyal.
Encourage staff to be creators
The reward of creating something and achieving results for people.
Be open and transparent
My team, besides being able to connect with tons of different people, loves our open and transparent culture where we discuss future successional planning and development continually. It creates a cultural environment where everyone wants to grow and knows where their future can be!
Help them realize their goals
I enjoy sharing my expertise and cultivating strong relationships with my clients.
Attend WeWork events
I appreciate the regular events and great opportunities to socialize with other founders. There’s always intelligent and interesting conversations at WeWork events.
A healthy work-life balance
A supportive, healthy work-life balance with a flexible schedule, along with an environment where employees can learn and improve their professional development.
Show your appreciation
Just 'being heard' and having flexibility can help staffers go from being fed-up, to putting the pedal to the metal in appreciation!
